The Oliver Hazard Perry-class guided-missile frigates (FFG) were a cornerstone of the U.S. Navy’s Cold War escort fleet. Designed in the 1970s as affordable, general-purpose warships, they balanced anti-submarine, anti-air, and limited anti-surface capabilities in a compact, cost-effective package. At 453 feet (138 meters) long with a full-load displacement of about 4,100 tons, they were smaller than destroyers but offered impressive versatility.

Their primary armament centered on a single Mk 13 missile launcher, capable of firing SM-1 Standard surface-to-air missiles and Harpoon anti-ship missiles. A 76 mm OTO Melara gun, triple torpedo tubes, and a Phalanx CIWS provided additional punch. One of their greatest strengths was aviation capability—they could operate two SH-60 Seahawk helicopters, greatly expanding their anti-submarine and surveillance reach.

Fifty-one Perry-class frigates were built for the U.S. Navy between 1975 and 2004, with more constructed for allies. They served worldwide, from Persian Gulf convoy duty to counter-narcotics patrols. Although retired from U.S. service by 2015 due to evolving threats and aging systems, many continue in active service with foreign navies today. Known for their reliability and adaptability, the Perry-class frigates proved that a modestly sized, well-designed warship could provide decades of valuable frontline service.
